Getting Around In LondonGetting around London needn’t be a daunting prospect. The Underground is by far the most convenient way to get from A to B, and — if you do it right — it needn’t break the bank. The London Transport Student Oyster Photocard offers students reductions of 30%. These savings are on top of the savings you can make by purchasing a Travelcard. These can be bought for different travel ‘zones’ in London and you can pay for your travel by the day, week, month or year, or by using your Oyster Card. Within these parameters, the Travelcard offers you unlimited travel on the Underground, buses and overground trains. If you make the same journey regularly at around about the same time, it can be an extremely cost-effective way to travel. Tooting Broadway station is only a short walk from St George’s and the tube transports you quickly and easily to the heart of London, to all other Underground lines and connects you directly to six mainline stations: Charing Cross, Euston, King’s Cross, St Pancras, London Bridge and Waterloo. Alternatively, you can always hop on a bus. For shorter journeys they are cheap, quick and convenient and a great way to see the sights of London. For those who like to keep fit or prefer a more environmentally friendly way of travelling, pedal-power may be the answer. There are an ever-increasing number of dedicated cycle tracks and quiet streets away from the main roads, where you can safely, and legally, dodge the traffic. As for cars, driving and parking in London is notoriously difficult and increasingly expensive. A limited number of parking spaces is available close to the Halls of Residence at St George’s Grove, but they are very quickly snapped-up and there are few, if any, cheap parking alternatives. |
