Mr Tom Bourne Ph.D., FRCOGIn 2006 I was made a Reader in Acute Gynaecology and Gynaecological Ultrasonography at St Georges University of London.Previously I was chairman of the European society for endosonography in gynaecology and obstetrics (ESEGO). In 2005 was went onto the board of the Association of Early Pregnancy Units. In 2006 I was elected onto the board of the International Society for Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (ISUOG) having served on the scientific and meetings committees and developed the programme for its scientific meeting . In 2006 I co-hosted the world congress of obstetrics and gynaecology with Kypros Nicolaides (almost 2000 registrants).In 2006 I have been invited to speak at FIGO and ESHRE as well as the RCOG. My clinical fellows have spoken at FIGO, ISUOG, ESHRE, Blair Bell and ASUM meetings. Previously I have been an invited speaker at the national ultrasound meetings in Australia, Sweden, UK, Canada, Brazil and numerous others. I have given lectures at hospital throughout the world by invitation.I am a medical advisor to the ectopic pregnancy trust. I have longstanding international collaborations with the University of Leuven and Oslo. I have been asked to peer review articles for several journals and was previously on the editorial board of "Ultrasound in Obstetrics and gynaecology"
I am currently supervisor for the MD thesis of 2 clinical fellows and 1 clinical lecturer. One will submit in January 2007 (final draft now), the others in Summer of 2007. I have 2 other clinical fellows starting research projects currently. I have supervised peer reviewed publications for over 19 SpR's or clinical fellows. I am on the steering committee of the IOTA international ovarian tumour analysis trial looking at over 1000 ovarian masses. I am also on the steering committes for the internation trial on pregnancies of unknown location (IPULA) and am currently about to start a European collaboration on the role of high definition imiaging in O& G as well as on early fetal growth. We have a coherant research programme in relation to the management of early of early pregnancy complications. We have a particular interest in the management of pregnancies of unknown location and ectopic pregnancy as well as several other aspects of the use of ultrasound in gynaecology.All these trials involve the development of protocols and overseeing publications and research technique for other colleagues. I have a lead role in a collaboration between St Georges and the University of Leuven Depts of Biostatistics and Gynaecology. This involves the generation of ideas and supervision of projects. In 2006-7 this has generated several peer reviewed papers in International Journals
