Research Introduction

In two successive Research Assessment Exercises (1996 and 2001), epidemiological research at St George’s has been "flagged" for special mention, equivalent in RAE2001 to a 5* rating within the overall 4 grading of Community-based Clinical Subjects.

Since 2001 we have been successful in raising major grants from strategic funding initiatives at the Medical Research Council (Health of the Public), Wellcome Trust (Biomedical Resources for Functional Genomics), Department of Health (air pollution research) and European Union (FP4, FP5  & FP6: air pollution, allergy, respiratory epidemiology and health services research).

Our current research themes include:

  • genetic and lifecourse approaches to disease causation and health inequalities
  • respiratory epidemiology and environmental health, especially health effects of outdoor air pollution
  • primary care epidemiology and biomedical informatics
  • cardiovascular epidemiology and preventive care
  • behavioural interventions in pregnancy and older people
