Pulmonary Vascular Research Group
The Pulmonary Vascular Research Group (PVRG) is a clinical, research and educational centre which focuses on the secondary causes of pulmonary vascular disease. It is multidisciplinary with input from specialists in cardiology, cardiothoracic medicine, surgery, anaesthesia and intensive care, haematology, molecular biology, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, respiratory medicine and rheumatology. The institute has links with other international centres of similar interest. It is hoped to expand these links further to promote clinical excellence, research and education. The administration of the PVRG will be located at St George’s Hospital and Medical School. Its clinical base resides within the cardiothoracic service centre and its research base within the department of cardiac and vascular science.
PVRG ACTIVITIES
1. Clinical Service -The multidisciplinary group within the PVRG meets on a monthly basis to discuss patients, clinical developments, research and to review the medical literature. Inpatients are treated in the Atkinson Morely Wing and are reviewed on a daily basis by junior and senior medical staff. Consultation with other members of the multidisciplinary group occurs as clinically indicated. There are three outpatient clinics per month and two right heart catheter lists designated to manage patients with pulmonary hypertension. There is also extensive non invasive cardiological and respiratory physiological support.
2. Education - In addition to the regular monthly meetings study days and symposia are being planned. It is also envisaged to arrange exchange of fellows with other centres and to develop postgraduate supervision for MSc, MD and PhD theses.
3. Research - The PVRG will support research fellows and research activities in both clinical and basic science work involving pulmonary vascular diseases. A number of publications and presentations have already resulted from this work, further studies are currently in motion and future work is being planned. The PVRG is developing a specialised patients database, which will be a tool for assessing the incidence of secondary pulmonary hypertension and will also promote clinical and basic scientific research.
