Cardiac & Vascular Sciences

The Division of Cardiac & Vascular Sciences (CVS) is one of six academic divisions within St George’s and comprises a cluster of disciplines concerned with the heart, cardiovascular system, hypertension, neurosciences, intensive therapies - including anaesthesia - and several surgical specialties. Although a large section of the Division is concerned with clinical sciences, there is also a major basic sciences component, predominantly concerned with the investigation of atherosclerosis and other vascular/smooth muscle pathologies.  The Division has strong links with St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust and with other clinical and basic academic divisions, both within and outside St George’s. Our main aims are to carry out research and to contribute to teaching and clinical service development.  A recent reorganization, based on research themes, resulted in the formation of four academic centres and two sections within the Division.

The Division has approximately 150 members of staff both clinical and non clinical and is managed by the Divisional Management Team (DMT) chaired by Professor A J Camm, the Divisional Head.  Other members of the team are Professor Hugh Markus (Research Co-ordinator and Head of the Centre for Stroke/Neurosciences), Professor Giuseppe  Sagnella  (Undergraduate teaching co-ordinator)  Dr Christina Baboonian (Post graduate teaching co-ordinator) Professor George Hall (Personal Development co-ordinator and Head of the Critical Care Section) Dr Gary Coulton (Enabling Technologies co-ordinator) Professor Marek Malik (Data Management )  Professor Matt Thompson (Clinical Co-ordinator), Professor Juan Carlos Kaski ( Head of the Cardiovascular Biology and Surgery Centre), Professor Graham McGregor (Head of the Preventative Cardiovacular Medicine Centre), Professor David Holt (Health and Safety) and the Division Manager Mrs Katia Nesbitt.
