Professor Juan Carlos Kaski

Biography Prof. Kaski was born in Mar del Plata, Argentina, and studied Medicine at the Universidad del Salvador, in Buenos Aires, where he was awarded the ‘Alberto Villamil Prize’ and the School of Medicine "Gold Medal". After completing a Medical Internship, he was Resident in Internal Medicine at "G. Rawson Hospital" (University Teaching Hospital) and Chief Resident at "R. Mejía Hospital", where he also spent two further years as a Cardiology Registrar under Prof MB Rosenbaum. Prof. Kaski moved to London in 1982 to carry out research on coronary artery spasm and coronary artery vasomotion. He was Research Fellow and Hon. Registrar under Prof A. Maseri at Hammersmith Hospital. where he completed his training in invasive and non-invasive cardiology. In 1986 he returned to Buenos Aires to take up a senior position at "R.Mejía Hospital" in Prof. M.B. Rosenbaum's Department of Cardiology. He spent two years in Buenos Aires (1986-1988) where he was appointed "Senior Researcher" by the Argentine Research Council and conducted research on microvascular angina. In 1988 Prof. Kaski was invited to return to London to direct a research section in the Cardiovascular Unit at Hammersmith Hospital where he was appointed Senior Registrar and Lecturer in Cardiology. At the Hammersmith he was involved in interventional cardiology and his research focused on coronary artery vasomotion. He also taught regularly at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School. In February 1991 Prof. Kaski joined the Department of Cardiological Sciences at St. George's Hospital Medical School to conduct research in the field of coronary artery disease. He created the Coronary Artery Disease Research Group in October 1993. In 1995 he was appointed Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant and was made Reader in Cardiology in 1998. Prof. Kaski is a Board Certified Cardiologist and a Certified Internal Medicine Physician. He is Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, the American College of Cardiology, the European Society of Cardiology and several other scientific societies. He is also Honorary Member of several national and international societies of Cardiology, including the British Cardiac Society and the New York Academy of Sciences. Prof. Kaski was Chairman of the Microcirculation Working Group of the European Society of Cardiology and a member of both the Training and Education Committee and the Scientific Board of the European Society of Cardiology. He has established successful research collaboration with several European and American Universities in the fields of coronary vasomotion, microvascular angina and inflammation, infection and ischaemic heart disease. J.C. Kaski has published over 200 original papers in major peer-review journals and his name appears on over 300 invited papers and book chapters and in more than 400 abstracts. Prof. Kaski acts as frequent reviewer for 15 major cardiology journals and is editorial board member of several scientific journals. Prof. Kaski is currently the Professor of Cardiovascular Science at St George’s and Head of Cardiological Sciences (formerly, Department of Cardiological Sciences). He is also Director of the Coronary Artery Disease Research Unit and Chief SSM examiner at St George’s. He was awarded an Honoris Causae Professor degree (Honorary Professor) by the Universidad del Salvador and the University of Sao Paulo. In 2001, Prof. Kaski was also awarded the degree of Doctor of Science (DSc) by the University of London. Prof. Kaski is married to Dr Marta Carpani, a Gastroenterologist ; they have three children, Juan Pablo, Diego and Maria-Cecilia.
