Biography

Professor Madden graduated with honours from University College Dublin Medical School in 1984. He obtained honours and college scholarships throughout his undergraduate education. His early postgraduate training leading to the membership of the Royal College of Physicians was in Ireland. He spent a year as tutor in clinical medicine and nephrology in the Department of Medicine in Trinity College Dublin before moving to Harefield Hospital Middlesex and the position of Clinical Registrar in Cardiothoracic Medicine. During this time he also obtained his MD in pulmonary hypertension. He subsequently became Senior Registrar in Cardiothoracic Medicine and Transplantation between Harefield and the Royal Brompton Hospitals and spent a year as Senior Registrar and Clinical Tutor in Respiratory Medicine at the Royal Brompton Hospital before obtaining his consultancy at St George’s Hospital in 1994.

Professor Madden is Director of the Endobronchial Intervention and Pulmonary Hypertension Services, Professor of Cardiothoracic Medicine and SDU Leader for Respiratory Medicine. His current major interests are in the field of interventional bronchoscopy. St George’s has become a national and international center for endobronchial laser therapy and stenting to manage patients with a variety of benign and malignant large airway conditions. This had led to multiple research projects, scientific presentations and peer review publications. Professor Madden is also the Chairman of the Pulmonary Hypertension Service at St George’s which is a multidisciplinary group looking at the diagnosis and new treatment modalities for primary and various forms of secondary pulmonary hypertension. Numerous research projects are in motion and already presentations and publications at scientific symposia and international journals has resulted from this work.

Professor Madden is a tutor in Critical Care and Physiology for the Royal College of Surgeons of London and is a member of the Court of Examiners for Critical Care and Physiology for the MRCS examinations for the Royal College of Surgeons of London. He is an instructor in Advanced Life Support (ALS) and in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) and is an instructor for the Royal College of Surgeons to teach ATLS instructors. Professor Madden is also a tutor on the Advanced Respiratory Medicine course and the diploma and MSc courses in Thoracic Medicine at The National Lung and Heart Institute, London.

He is Professor of Cardiothoracic Medicine. Professor Madden is the author of over 240 peer reviewed, invited articles, book chapters and abstracts. He has given over 240 lectures at national and international symposia and has been a member of scientific committees for international symposia on a number of occasions.

Professor Madden is married to Aileen and has four children (Aisling, Aoife, Niamh and Roisin). Professor Madden has traveled extensively, is fluent in French and Gaelic, is an advanced snow skiier, a master scuba diver and a long term student and instructor in martial arts. He was an international track and field athlete and soccer player during his secondary school and undergraduate medical school education and won many medals and prizes at international meetings and holds track and field records to this date.
