NewsNHS Electronic Databases Set to Change From April 2008 the online databases that NHS members use (Medline, Embase, CINAHL, BNI, AMED, PsycINFO, Kings Fund and DH-Data) will change. Unfortunately saved searches or regular alerts in Dialog WILL NOT be transferred to the new system. Therefore we advise you to:
The new system, called NLH Search 2.0, comes into operation early April. More information and training dates will be sent out in the next few weeks. (07.03.08) Cambridge University Press Journals Now Available The library has recently purchased the full Cambridge University Press bundle. It's available onsite and offsite (via Athens) and can be accessed using the library journals catalogue at: http://www.journals.sgul.ac.uk/ SGUL have recently changed their policy on lost property. Previously, items found in the Library have been kept for 2 weeks before being taken downstairs to the main reception. However from today items of lost property will be kept in the Library for 24 hours only after which they will be taken to the main University reception on the ground floor of the Hunter wing. (24/01/08) New Year, New NHS Resources: JAMA and Archives & Cinahl Full Text To welcome in the New Year, new NHS electronic resources to support medical and non-medical healthcare staff are now available. (09.01.08) JAMA and Archives Titles The National Library for Health has signed-up to a three-year deal across the country providing online access to JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) and its stable of Archives which includes key titles such as Archives of Internal Medicine, Archives of Surgery and Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. Access is via the usual NHS Athens password from 1st January. To access the JAMA and the Archive titles login to My Athens and select JAMA and Archives from the list of resources. Something for everyone in the NHS family The NLH is also revamping its general medical, nursing and allied health collection, and so from 1st April, a collection called Cinahl Full Text will replace the current Proquest collection of national journals. Here in London however you can get a sneak preview and access the 590 titles included in this collection right now with your NHS Athens password! To access Cinahl Full text login to My Athens and select EbscoHost from the list of resources. Titles from both new collections will also eventually appear on the My Journals your one-stop-shop for NHS journals. St. George’s Library is one of 11 libraries across London that have recently opened their doors to social workers. Working in collaboration with Skills for Care www.skillsforcare.org and London Health Libraries www.londonlinks.ac.uk the aim is to support the information needs of social workers, particularly those engaged in post-qualifying awards. Extra books sponsored by Skills for Care have been bought, and dedicated library staff have been trained on the information needs of social workers. For more information see our Membership page. Visit http://www.uptodate.com to logon or follow links to it on the library's databases webpage (17/9/07) New Resource Available for NHS Staff The Map of Medicine’s 387 patient care pathways are now available to all NHS staff in the London area.The Map of Medicine includes information on: Accident and Emergency, Internal Medicine, Mental Health, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Oncology and Palliative Care, Paediatrics, and Surgery. On the 14th August there will be some changes made to the way MyAthens looks. The changes are minimal and should make using MyAthens easier by allowing users to view all the relevant information on their new homepage which can also be customised. These screenshots are available to show users what MyAthens will look like. Athens have also updated their Terms and Conditions and users will be asked to agree to these again. This is a 'one-off' exercise and users will not be required to do this again until any further changes are introduced. (02/08/07) Your Athens Account (Medical School & Faculty) The library is currently testing a new system (Shibboleth) which will eventually replace the Athens security system in 2008. Using Shibboleth you will be able to log in to electronic resources (databases and ejournals) using your current network account. You will no longer need a separate Athens account. BMJ Clinical Evidence and other resources now available through Athens Information is everywhere, but knowing whom to trust is difficult for both clinicians and patients. St.George's Library has recently subscribed to 3 major online sources of evidence-based health care Access to these and many other resources please visit our Databases page. (11.07.07) The Library has recently purchased close to 200 e-book titles from MyiLibrary, provided by Coutts. This includes a good variety of medical, nursing and some general books (eg.: statistics) and are accessible both to academic and NHS users via library catalogue. There is a Helpsheet on the E-Books page to help you find the titles you want. (20/06/07) NHS A-Z List of Journals Goes Live My Journals is a new national A-Z list of NHS journals, co-ordinated by the National Library for Health. My Journals offers a one stop-shop of national, regional and local journals and electronic books. The service links all NHS library users to full-text electronic journals and books, and provides information about the Library's print journals for St. George's Hospital and Wandsworth PCT staff. My Journals also provides a journal table of contents alerts service so you can keep up to date with new content from journals listed on the site, direct to your in-box. Available via Ovid it provides an interactive overview of human anatomy—literally from head to toe. It features three-dimensional animations, clinical videos and textual descriptions by leading specialists. Primal Pictures has created the world’s first complete 3D model of human anatomy. Images are derived from real medical scan and dissection data interpreted by a team of staff anatomists, and constructed using advanced imaging by an in-house team of graphics specialists.
