Regulations

1.  Prior arrangement should be made with the Archives Librarian to use the collection. Researchers should provide one form of identification.

2. The books and collections are shelved on closed stacks. A staff member will accompany you to the collecction and will remain with the researcher, as unsupervised visits are not permitted

3. Pencils, typewriters, computers, and recording devices can be used to take notes. Do not use a pen. Notes must be taken with soft-lead pencils, available by asking staff. Personal computers may also be used as long as they do not disturb other researchers or staff.

4. Materials should not be written on, marked, altered, leaned on, folded anew, traced, or handled in any way likely to damage them. Immediately notify the staff of any damage noticed. If you have a correction or additional information on an item, please notify the staff. Do not fold, write on or damage the records. Handle all materials with care.

5. Smoking, food, and drink are forbidden in the Archives and in the Library.

6. All materials must be used within the Archives or in the Library, if the materials are brought upstairs from the collection.

7. Readers should be seated where they can be seen by the staff when using the archive materials

8. If special copies need to be made, ask a staff member for assistance. History collections are non-circulating. Photocopying materials will be carried out by the member of staff.

9. Examine one box , books and other materials at a time. Do not mix the order of the folders or the documents within. If you find a discrepancy, notify the archivist. Do not rearrange the items yourself.

10. Gloves should be used when handling fragile materials and photographs

11.The Archive Library reserves the right to restrict the use of materials which are not arranged, are being arranged, or are exceptionally valuable or fragile.

12. The Archive Library reserves the right to refuse to copy certain fragile or oversized materials. Researchers are requested to be as selective as possible when making xerox requests since the process is, ultimately, harmful to the materials.

Use of Manuscirpts

Permission will be granted to a qualified scholar for the examination and use of manuscipts.

Publishing from the collection.

Materials used from the collection for publication should always acknowledge St.George's, University of London' for the use of materials. This includes, photographs, slides and all printed materials held in the collection subject to the discretion of the Librarian.

A price list of photo duplication services and user fees is available upon request. Any negatives made in the process of duplicating materials from our collections become the property of Archives. Researchers may not use their own camera or video equipment to copy materials without the written permission of the Archives Librarian.

Researchers assume full responsibility for complying with any copyright, libel or literary property rights applicable to their use of History Archive and Library holdings.

History Archive materials may not be published or displayed, in full or in part, without the written permission of the History Librarian or Librarian. All materials published or displayed must be credited to St.George's, University of London / St.George's Hospital

All materials are to be returned to the staff member in charge. Researchers are responsible for the collection items provided for their use until the items have been received and inspected by the staff member. As a security measure, the staff reserves the right to inspect all articles, including research materials, brought into the History Archive Area.

The Archives Librarian reserves the right to refuse access to any individual who has demonstrated such carelessness or deliberate destructiveness as to endanger the safety of the materials in the collections, or who has failed to comply with the above stated rules.
