Below is an alphabetic list of some of the major databases available. The list is not exhaustive but does cover a wide range of health & related topics.

Some provide free access; others require an Athens username & password. 

  • SGUL members can use their University logins to access Athens resources. 
  • NHS members still require their separate Athens username and password Self Register for Athens for NHS staff (must use an NHS computer).

Cancer Topics US National Cancer Institute database. Cancer Literature subset of PubMed. Cancer Topics is freely available.

CINAHL Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature. Primarily concerned with nursing but approximately 35% of articles are related to allied health disciplines. More than 1,200 publications are indexed.

Citation Indexes

Web of Science Citation Indexes. Find citations for a paper. This can be an effective way of extending a search. Separate Indexes are available for Science, Social Sciences, and Art & Humanities.

DynaMED DynaMed is a quick and easy-to-use medical reference resource designed to provide health professionals, researchers and students with the best available evidence to support clinical decision-making. It contains clinically organized summaries of nearly 2,000 topics covering all aspects of care and is updated daily from review of the research literature. No password required.

Embase European medical database which indexes 3,500 titles. There is a only 37% overlap with Medline; coverage tends to be more up to date than Medline and it is particularly strong in the areas of drugs, toxicology and psychiatry.

ERIC The Education Resources Information Center is a US database covering education information. Abstracts of documents and journal articles on education research and practice.

IBBS The International Bibliography of the Social Sciences, produced by the London School of Economics and Political Science, focuses mainly on the four core social science disciplines - anthropology, economics, politics and sociology. IBSS is especially strong on international material.

NDAD National Digital Archive of Datasets. Archived digital datasets and documents from UK central government departments. Spans 40 years of recent history - earliest available dataset is 1963.

NCBI National Centre for Biotechnology Information databases. From US National Libray of Medicine. Provides molecular biology information, NCBI creates public databases, conducts research in computational biology, develops software tools for analyzing genome data, and disseminates biomedical information.

NLH National Library for Health. A collection of resources healthcare including  literature databases, E-journlas and E-books, Evidence-based reviews, Guidance, Specialist libraries, Images and Patient Information.

NRR National Research Register. The Register contains information on research which is being funded by, or of interest to, the UK NHS. Provides a reasonable record of projects that were ongoing from early 2000 onwards. NRR is freely available.  NRR is freely available.
