The Neurodegeneration unit was founded by Professor Austen in 1994.

Our vision is to develop new therapies to halt Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and to create a more enlightened environment to help present sufferers of the disease and their helpers to cope.

The objective of the research is to perform clinical trials of statins in early and moderate forms of AD; to develop novel inhibitors of b-secretase; develop inhibitors of oligomerisation of amyloid peptides; develop models of British and Danish dementias.

The benefit of this research will be an improvement in the quality of care and understanding of the lives of the millions of sufferers of AD worldwide. New therapeutic agents will offer a real hope of halting the onset and relentless deterioration of AD.
