Programme Specifications
Introduction
In 1996 the Government held an inquiry into ways in which higher education could be better organised, funded and managed. The inquiry team published its report in July 1997 and one of its recommendations stressed 'the importance of clear and explicit information for students so that they can make informed choices about their studies and the levels they are aiming to achieve'. The inquiry team added 'that clear descriptions of programmes should be developed so that students are able to compare different offerings and make sensible choices about the programmes they wish to take'.
The 'clear descriptions' envisaged by the inquiry team are called 'programme specifications'.
What is a programme specification? Programme Specifications are designed to provide information on:
-
The learning intentions and outcomes of each taught course: they cover the knowledge that a student will be expected to have upon completion, and the skills - both subject specific and transferable - that will have been developed through the learning process.
-
The process that enables these intentions to be achieved: they describe the learning and teaching and assessment methods, how courses will be managed, and the way in which students will be supported throughout their learning.
Who are programme specifications for? Programme Specifications are designed for a number of audiences
-
For academics: Programme Specifications promote discussion and reflection among members of the teaching staff of the courses; they enable external examiners to understand the aims of the Programme in terms of assessment criteria; they act as reference points in the processes of internal and external audit of the quality of teaching provision.
-
For employers: Programme Specifications detail the skills and other transferable intellectual abilities fostered by the Programme.
-
For students and potential students: in their discussion of outcomes, teaching methods, progression and assessment, Programme Specifications assist students both to make choices designed to realise their own learning aspirations, and to reflect on the process of learning.

Please be aware that courses do change over time. A change may have been introduced to a course which has yet to be incorporated in the specification. Also, a planned change may not come into affect for some time. If a substantive change has been or will be introduced, applicants will be made aware of this during the application process.
