Facilities and Resources

Facilitating success
As a student at St George’s you know that you’ll have the expertise, experience and support of some of the finest teaching professionals in healthcare from your first day at the institution and through every day of your study programme. But this is only part of the commitment we make to you.

The dedicated study environment at St George’s offers everything you need to give you the best possible chance of success.

Superb computing facilities
Easy access to computers is an essential part of any study programme.

There are three Computer Rooms adjacent to the library, two of which have overnight access, should you ever feel the need to burn the midnight oil.

With over 100 workstations, two of the Computer Rooms can be used flexibly for open-access or for formal teaching sessions, involving large or small groups of students.

The halls of residence have their own computer cluster as well as wireless network access in all the rooms. There is also wireless access in locations around St George’s, including some parts of the library.

Software applications on the St George’s computer network include Word, Excel, PowerPoint and SPSS. Internet and e-mail facilities are also provided, enabling access to information throughout the world. Advice and support for using various software applications is offered, and the library also runs IT Training courses.

See the Computing Services main page for more details.

 Comprehensive library resources
The library is a focal point of study in any educational institution. We have a specialist health care and biomedical sciences collection of more than 42,000 books and multimedia materials.

The library subscribes to over 5,800 mainly electronic journal titles, as well as a wide variety of medical and health care databases for topic searching.

Regular courses in Information Literacy are run by the library staff, to enable students to become expert in finding information. The library has generous opening hours and offers a pleasant environment in which to study.

The computer rooms and the library are conveniently located near the teaching rooms and state-of-the-art lecture theatres, equipped with the very latest presentation technology.

See the Library main page for full details.

Clinical and laboratory facilities —
invaluable hands-on experience
One of the reasons why so many students choose St George’s is the wealth of clinical experience that the institution is able to offer.

Sharing a site with one of the busiest hospitals in the NHS means there is always a tremendous diversity of clinical study material with which to work. With so many patients on site and so many different cases, you can get involved straight away in routine clinical procedures. Students on certain courses can also take advantage of placements to other hospitals in the area to broaden their experience still further.

Fully equipped clinical skills laboratories on the St George’s site give you plenty of opportunity to practice and perfect your skills in procedures such as taking blood pressure and pulse, checking for vital signs and resuscitation techniques.

Different scenarios can be set up using the latest patient dummies to mirror real-life health problems and symptoms. You are also encouraged to practice these basic skills and techniques on your fellow students.

Three newly-refurbished “wet” laboratories (capacity 60-80 students each) allow the delivery of a wide range of practical classes in the biological sciences, complementing the information derived from other teaching sessions as well as giving direct experience of experimental and diagnostic techniques.

The substantial level of world-class research on the St George’s site (research income last year £15m) underpins the wide spectrum of research project opportunities available to undergraduates, including access to state-of-the-art technology within individual research groups and in central research facilities such as the Medical Biomics Centre.

Our Physiotherapy laboratories enable you to gain simulated practical experience in a wide range of skills before undertaking clinical work placements.

You are also able to use general teaching rooms for private study when not in use for formal teaching.
