When you think of living in London, the words “cheap accommodation” may not be the first to spring to mind. Prepare yourself for a pleasant surprise. Living in and around Tooting is still less expensive compared with many other parts of London.

The new halls of residence at St George’s are one of the most modern and competitively priced types of University accommodation in or near the capital.

St George’s will be your second home for your first year. So if you need to rent accommodation, finding a room where you can feel at home will be immensely important in helping you to settle in quickly. If you have decent, comfortable accommodation, it’s one less thing to worry about and you can relax and concentrate fully on your studies.

Accommodation for new undergraduate students
Every effort is made to accommodate all new students who require a room in a hall of residence. 

Rooms are allocated when your exam results are confirmed and we know that you have met any other conditions of entry to your course. 

If we have more applications than rooms available, we will endeavour to let you know as soon as possible, but this is unlikely to be before the first week in September.

What is the closing date to apply for accommodation?

Applying before 16 July 2007 If you wish to apply for a room in halls of residence please return the Halls Request Form as soon as possible (you will be sent this when you apply), and definitely by 16 July 2007. We will allocate hall rooms at the end of August and send you a contract at that time.   You will be asked to sign the contract and return it with a deposit to secure a room by 7 September 2007. If you are not going to be able to return your contract in this short time frame then a relative or a parent can return it for you. If you cannot find anyone to sign and return the contract then you should let us know.   If applications for halls are oversubscribed anyone who did not return the request form by the 16 July 2007 or the contract by 7 September 2007 will be placed on a waiting list.

Applying after 16 July 2007 (for 2007 start) If you apply for a place through Clearing and there are still places available in halls of residence we will endeavour to allocate a place but we cannot give a guarantee.

Brand new Halls of Residence ready for 2007-08 In October 2007 we will have Phase 1 of our new halls of residence complete, with Phase 2 expected to open in December 2007. More details: www.sglu.ac.uk/halls. You may be given a room either in the new or old halls depending on when your course starts.  Please note we cannot reserve places just in the new halls, but if you start in the old halls you will automatically be allocated a place in the new halls as soon as Phase 2 is completed in December 2007.

Private accommodation for other years and postgraduate students

After your first year, you will usually move into private rented accommodation, though very occasionally you may stay in the student halls.

There are many reasonably priced rented bed-sitting rooms, maisonettes, flats and houses around Tooting. Houses and flats are often handed on between groups of students. The majority of our students find private accommodation within a 15—20 minute walk from St George’s.

St George’s is part of the University of London giving you access to the University of London Housing Services .
