Health and Safety

St. George's is committed to ensuring that appropriate adjustments are made in order to ensure the health and safety of disabled students, or students with special educational needs.

Students are urged to contact the Disabilities Coordinator, (Michael Woodman), and the Health, Safety and Environmental Adviser, (Marion Gorman) if they feel adjustments will need to be made.

For example, students might wish to discuss:

  • Emergency evacuation procedures: The four corner lifts in Hunter wing are fireproof, and are accessible to most wheelchair users; it would be useful to discuss fire evacuation procedures with all newly enrolled students using wheelchairs, (preferably before the first term begins), in order to develop a personal evacuation plan.

  • The impact of a physical disability in a lab setting: in many situations, St. George’s has implemented lowered benches and adapted fume hoods in labs.

  • The creation of a personal risk assessment in relation to a special educational need.

These are just a few examples - however, every student is unique, and we are always available to discuss individual requirements or give advice.

Wherever possible, St. George's aims to create an accessible environment which anticipates the needs of disabled students, but we would still urge students to get in touch to discuss any individual requirements.
