| Year 1 |
In the first two years the course follows the modular structure undertaken by the medical students at St George's.
The modules provide a broad coverage of the fundamental aspects of cell and molecular biology, anatomy, physiology and pharmacology. The aim here is to equip you with a wide range of knowledge and to prepare you for choices of more specialised units in the final year, appropriate to the various career directions you may wish to follow. |

Final Year
Year 3 |
In the final year a choice of course units provides advanced coverage of a wide variety of topics to Honours Degree level. You will be able to make choices appropriate to your future career options. Examples of units on offer are:
- The Biology of Cancer
- Genes and Gene Expression
- Human Genetics
- Immunology Related to Medicine
- Development, Reproduction and Disease
- Bioinformatics
Your choice of course units will also include an extensive laboratory-based project, providing you with the opportunity to carry out and present a defined piece of research. This is invaluable experience for those wishing to continue with postgraduate research. |
Methods of Teaching The course features a variety of teaching methods including lectures and extensive laboratory practicals, tutorial teaching (including scientific problem-based learning), self-directed learning schemes, and computer-assisted learning programmes.
Methods of Assessment Students’ performance is assessed by a mixture of incourse assessment and written exams, and each year’s marks contribute to the final degree outcome.
Career Opportunities in Biomedical Sciences The course will provide you with an excellent opportunity to obtain a first degree in the sciences related to medicine, leading to openings to a range of careers. Graduate entry into a medical degree course is one possibility and St George’s will consider the best Biomedical Science graduates for admission to year three of its five year MBBS programme. Alternatively you may choose to enter into a research career or to specialise in areas such as forensic medicine, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, clinical trials coordination or biomedical product marketing.
Selection Procedure In addition to meeting the academic criteria for admission, you should have an understanding of the nature of the biomedical sciences and an awareness of the career opportunities. Places are normally offered without interview, although a small number of candidates may be invited to attend for an interview. If offered a place you will be invited to a post-offer Applicant Day, where you will have the opportunity to meet the Director and Admissions Tutor for Biomedical Science. You will get to meet current Biomedical Science students, who will take you on a tour of St George's.
