Diploma of Higher Education/BSc (hons) Healthcare Practice

This dynamic course is designed to be responsive to the needs and prioritities of the NHS, voluntary and independent sectors. As such, changes in the courses offered and the delivery format are possible.

The course is designed for practising nurses and midwives who wish to continue their clinical education. It offers a flexible post-registration programme that links academic study to clinical practice. The course aims to develop the skills of the experienced practitioner whilst they remain actively involved in direct patient care.

Course Details

Duration: Diploma - 3 years part-time. Degree - A further 3 years part-time.

Entry Requirements
Nursing or Midwifery qualification
One year post-registration experience

Course Structure

This is a flexible modular course with a wide range of professional pathways.

Modules can be combined to form an individualised programme of study. They are organised into pathways that reflect particular specialities in nursing, midwifery and healthcare and include the following:

  • Autonomous Practice

  • Cancer and Palliative Care

  • Care of Older People

  • Child Health

  • Critical Care

  • Learning Disabilities

  • Medical, Surgical and Perioperative Care

  • Mental Health

  • Midwifery, Women's and Family Health

  • Nutrition and Tissue Viability

  • Primary Care

Several general modules and study days are also offered.

Methods of Teaching

A variety of teaching methods are employed which vary from module to module, including lectures, seminars, group work and clinical practice.

Methods of Assesment

Participants must pass both the clinical practice and the theoretical assessment for each module in order to achieve credit.
