Diploma of Higher Education in Nursing/Registered Nurse: Learning Disability NursingThis course is designed to enable the student to develop the knowledge, skills and values to qualify as a Registered Nurse in one of the following branches: Adult Nursing; Mental Health Nursing; Children's Nursing; Learning Disability Nursing. The Diploma in Nursing is for applicants who wish to work closely with individuals and their families to promote healthcare and support those who have healthcare problems. By the end of the course you will be prepared for a lifelong career in an innovative and expanding profession. You will benefit from a wide range of excellent facilities at the University designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge essential for the professional nurse in the new millennium. Applications are encouraged from individuals from a wide range of backgrounds. Whilst you need to be fit and have a good, balanced educational background, personal qualities such as a mature outlook, good communication skills and empathy are highly valued.
Course Structure There are two pathways through the three year pre-registration programme. At the end of the first year, students will be supported in their decision to proceed with the course at either diploma or degree level. Students who wish to study for a BSc Nursing once they have qualified will have a variety of opportunities to choose from. The course covers a wide range of subjects which are applied to the theory and practice of nursing: Nursing Profession and Practice; Applied Social Sciences, Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, Social Policy; Applied Biological Sciences, Physiology, Microbiology, Biochemistry; Health Promotion and Teaching; Communication Studies and Information Technology ; Research Methods; Option Modules Methods of teaching The course comprises 50% theory and 50% clinical practice. The course offers a rich variety of clinical settings in which to develop and practise your nursing skills - from inner city placements to those based in more suburban and rural areas Assessment of the Course Assessment is continuous and by a combination of academic course work and assessment of clinical practice. All modules are assessed to provide students with feedback on progress and to enable advancement to the next phase of the programme. A variety of assessment strategies are used, including essays, examinations and project work.
